Keeping the light in their eyes. Part 2

Ignoring the inner critic

How to keep the light in their eyes.. Part 2

Keeping the light in those adorable brown eyes wasn’t always easy.

But here’s one lesson I learned:

the first step was simply keeping them at home in a place where they were loved.

At first, it really was that simple.

But then I realized something bigger—it wasn’t just about keeping them out of public school.

It was about protecting their childhood and allowing them to be who they naturally were.

That meant fighting against my own pre-taught ideas.

Having been public-schooled myself, I thought kids needed to be doing homework, learning times tables, or reading by age 5.

But deep down, I knew that wasn’t right for us.

Instead of pushing them to hit those milestones early, I chose to trust my instincts as a mom.

I let them play.

They built treehouses, made mud pies, and explored the world in their own magical ways.

But wow, the critics were loud.

I heard it all:

  • “Your kids will fall behind!”
  • “Why aren’t they reading yet?”
  • “You’re going to regret this!”

But the loudest voice I had to fight was my own.

Those moments of doubt kept creeping in.

I worried constantly—was I failing them?

Was I wrong?

Every time the doubts got too loud, I turned to God for help.

And He whispered to me: “Protect their childhood.”

So I let go of the pressure.

I let them be kids.

And now, 20 years later,

as my grown children tell stories about their incredible childhood memories,

I’m so glad I listened.

They talk about the adventures they had,

the laughter they shared, and the freedom they felt to just be themselves.

They never knew about my nail-biting doubts or the sleepless nights I spent worrying if I was doing the right thing.

But looking back, I know this for sure:

trusting in my inspiration, even when it went against the grain, was one of the best decisions I ever made.

The light in their eyes stayed bright.

And their childhood?

It was everything I hoped it would be. 💛

Stay tuned for the next part,

where I’ll share more about what I learned (and almost got wrong) on this journey.

You can do this, momma!
